A five-minute return to your body.
You do not need an hour. You do not need incense, a cushion, or a quiet house. You need five minutes and the willingness to come back to the body you have been living above.
Most of us live an inch or two outside ourselves. We think our lives from a slight distance, narrating instead of feeling. This is a practice for closing that inch.
The practice
- 01Sit or stand. Let your feet meet the floor. Notice that the floor is holding you and has been the entire time.
- 02Take one slow breath in through the nose. Let it be longer than usual. Let the exhale be even longer.
- 03Name three things you can feel — not see, feel. The seam of your sock. The temperature of the air on your collarbone. The weight of your own hand.
- 04Place a palm on your chest. Wait until you feel your heartbeat. Wait a little longer.
- 05Whisper, out loud if you can: I am here. I am here. I am here.
The body is not a project. It is the address.
That is the whole meditation. Five minutes. No app. No streak. Just a small returning, done as often as you can remember to do it.
Come back tomorrow. Come back an hour from now. The body is patient. It has been waiting.
